Best Camping Sleeping Mats

Relative comfort

Would you like to sleep comfortably when sleeping outdoors? To be honest, we can’t promise you will. The reason being, there are many variables when it comes to comfort. We can promise though, you can choose from some of the best camping sleeping mats that are made.

Do you know someone who sleeps like a baby outdoors? Some do and that’s great! However, I think it would be safe to say, many who like the outdoors find it a challenge to find the good night’s sleep they wish. Why?

No doubt you could list your own reasons. Just some difficulties that we have experienced and observed in capturing that needed sleep outdoors, are just normal concerns such as, weather conditions, concern about animals, noises at night.

Sleeping Mats & Pads

If you are older in years you may remember the “Pup Tents”, these were very heavy as they were made from a cloth material. I was young at the time but I can still remember sleeping in one. They were not waterproof nor water resistant.

In those days’s there wasn’t really an inflatable sleeping mat or pad, at least not anywhere close to what we have today.

So then, what are some of the features of sleeping mats and how can they give at least a measure of comfort?

Air Mattresses for Camping and Backpacking

We will also be featuring an Air Mattress which can help keep you warm on those cold nights and can be used, either, on an overnight trip or a longer trek.

A little on the expense side?

  1. When we were able to start seeing each other again, after all these months, my friends and I organized a little camping trip.

And they lent me a sleeping mat. Hey, I slept all 8 hours and didn’t even noticed. How comfortable they are. I was impressed. I do not know if it was because we walked a lot that day, but I had never slept that well when camping.

  2. I used to camp all the time when I was a kid. I’m weird though. Something about the outdoors just puts me to sleep. I never had any problems sleeping outside or in a tent.  But what you say makes sense. I think there are some good options out there.  And I would probably sleep differently now as an adult. 3. I have no idea how people can sleep outdoors comfortably without a tent or a sleeping mat. That could never be me. I would be dreaming about bugs getting into my hair or in other areas. Even if we are camping outdoors, it is important to have a good night sleep, so we are well rested and ready to take on the next day. A sleeping mat can be seen as a blessing and we need to appreciate them more for helping us cope in terrible rainy British weather.

    • Thank you for your comment Amzy, People all around the world have been exposed either, voluntarily or not, to uncomfortable sleeping conditions and have had to cope, however, my article has it’s focus on hiking and backpacking and the relative comfort that may be appreciated by having a sleeping mat or pad that may achieve that goal, at least to some degree. I agree, how important it is to get a good nights sleep!

  4. Perfect timing for this post. Holidays are close and Im looking forward for camping with my family. But I do have my years and I would love to have comfortable mat for a tent. My old one unfortunately is not as good as I would like it to be. What types or bands you recommend? Do you know anything comfortable and in decent price?

  6. Hi Lonnie
Thanks for sharing your views on the best camping sleeping mats. The modules you presented seems to be very cozy and comfortable. The price is on the higher side but when it is compared with the comfort after a long camping day, I think it will be justified. Do you suggest to carry air pump for these mats? I doubt if it will increase the weight of my backpack.

    • Yes, a little on the high side, however, when considering alternatives, for example, a hammock, which may work for some without a problem, or, a less expensive sleeping mat which may end up being a barrier between the person and the floor of the tent instead of serving the purpose for which it was made.

As far as the air pump, I don’t think it would add much weight, also some of the mats are self inflatable.
